moonlight experiments
February 4, 2009
No, not planting by the moon phases yet, just experimenting with night photography, which I’ve thought about doing many times with the moon on the snow. Usually I’m too cold. Tonight I braved it for a while. Looks like I need more practice and the beefier gloves.

I prefer the cold toned versions, since the originals have an ugly orange cast from the lights down the road. But you can’t really see the detail in these little pics. hmph

I LOVE these pics – was going to comment on your flickr and then I thought maybe you posted about how… How? tripod? trickery? Porch view (edited) is especially genius.
Thanks, Kris. No trickery to speak of, unless you count unusually clear skies and a gorgeous moon. There was a chilly tripod set up, a 20-second exposure. The edited version uses a Lightroom preset called Coldtone, which overexposes the image, hypes up the blacks, amps up the blue hues and desaturates the others. Because the basic preset was too murky, I played with the levels to bring the midtones back up and get some of the trees in the background to light up. I like the effect a lot, too.
