the MCK

February 20, 2008

We got to our second Mt. Club of Kenya meeting last night, a regular Tuesday night affair that offers a chance to drink cheap beers and gin & tonics with an international mix of members at their bar, soak up some African climbing history, plan trips, look at topos, tell lies, and come up with better lies. It’s a small but tight group of trekkers and climbers actively looking to soak up this gorgeous country, and it’s thanks to a few of them that we had such a gracious welcome when we arrived and now have made some great connections. Next week it’s the monthly potluck and slideshow, this time given by Alex on his trip to El Cap, and Chris can’t wait to give some heckling to our new friend and chief lie-teller (and by all accounts a hell of a mtn guide).

at the Mt. Club of Kenya clubhouse. Very old and British and clubby. Located at the Wilson airport, a storied Nairobi location.

In the MCK’s Howell library, named for Ian Howell, and a treasure trove of climbing history. Oddly, they’re in need of a librarian to keep things in order just when I should stumble into such a fascinating little room…

This was an interesting-looking building! It looks as if there is some work needing to be done in cataloguing and preserving the Club’s material.

So great to be welcomed in to a great group of people with open arms. Strangely, I’ve just started applying to library positions myself. Great minds, eh?

It really is a fabulous place, Kate. Walking in, you get the feeling you should square your shoulders and be up for the challenges cataloged on the walls and in the journals. I’ll let you know how I fare once we get up on Mt. Kenya!
