fear, excitement, procrastination–teaching

January 7, 2009

I’m teaching a class to staff on campus this Friday–a digital photo class for beginners! There will be two one-hour sessions. I’ve never taught anything, I’m not a great speaker, and my thin voice dies after about 4.5 minutes of talking. Still I’m really psyched to be doing this, to help people use their cameras a little better and turn from taking photographs to making them. I love the act and the art of photography!

I don’t love how unprepared I feel. It’s an informal class but one session already has 24 people coming, and 14 to the other one! It’s only an hour, and there will be a lot to cover, so I’d love more time to make a killer presentation and practice running through it out loud 100 times.

If cuteness helps, I’m hoping some of my illustrations will get me past not knowing every last detail about the newest digi point and shoots. Buddy illustrates the rule of thirds:

Georgia O’Keefe said she was terrified everyday, but she never let that get in the way of doing what she wanted to do. Here’s to firsts!

As it says on my wife’s resume:

    Tell me and I forget.
    Teach me and I remember.
    Involve me and I learn.
