he sank beneath your wisdom like a stone

January 11, 2009

Sometimes it snows and you switch on the TV and find, among monster truck rallies and cooking shows, music that you love sung and played how you’d never imagined it, and you love it more, again, through tears and smiles and memories. From the documentary, “Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man”

Nick Cave sings “Suzanne.” He also sang “Tower of Song,” rather campily, on the “I’m Your Fan” record years ago. This one is simpler and more humble.

I never paid much attention to “Tonight Will Be Fine” when Leonard did it, but put in in the hands of a countrified son of British folk icons, I can’t tell whether it’s a smokey 1990 Tuesday night in the Continental Club or Sunday morning in my living room.

Here’s Teddy slaying the room & channeling George Jones.

Somebody was listening to Tracy Craig this morning …

I like the Lyle Lovett version of ‘She thinks … ‘ but it’s nowhere to be found on YouTube.

aargh if only those ladies had shut up and let Nick sing! But thanks for posting these – it’s great to hear a few new old tunes first thing in the morning.

Glad you appreciate them! The backup singers are the ones Leonard has worked with on those fabled records, and they are a big piece of the show. Pretty amazing voices, but yeah sometimes I just wanted them to stop, too.
