surprised by snowdrops

surprised by snowdrops

Snowdrops or raindrops, these sweet little blooms popped up outside the house late last week, to everyone’s surprise. Someone planted them years ago for a day like this, when it’s just-spring! Yes, it’s below freezing already this evening, but I’m calling it: Spring–just!

The world is mud-luscious, the creeks are running fast, the snow is almost gone from the hollows. It can’t be stopped.

In town today, I saw a hillside of crocuses almost open and drifts of tiny snowdrops, and it took my breath away. I myself didn’t realize how much I longed for color until that purple and green nearly made me cry.

If you still need inspiration, read 7 quotes about spring at 7 of.

And at last I can get my favorite spring poem out of my head and onto a page:

in Just-
spring when the world is mud-
luscious the little
lame balloonman

whistles far and wee

and eddieandbill come
running from marbles and
piracies and it’s
spring

when the world is puddle-wonderful

the queer
old balloonman whistles
far and wee
and bettyandisbel come dancing

from hop-scotch and jump-rope and

it’s
spring
and
the

goat-footed

balloonMan whistles
far
and
wee

– e.e. cummings
