Club Coyote

February 13, 2010

Night before last there was a wild party across the street. We were not invited, but all the neighborhood coyotes were. Winter has brought them closer to the house than we’ve ever seen, including trails right through the yard. Here’s the morning after scene. Our house is the one on the left. Bud and I were curled on the couch right under the front windows when the howling started. He never made a sound.

They sat atop every hay bale, and dug around the bottom and sides in search of critters. All that yipping and crying we heard must have meant they found some.

Who's king of the hay bale?

Did Bud not hear them, or did he chose to ignore them? I think it would take Loretta several hours to calm down after hearing her wild cousins.

No, he heard loud and clear, & both our faces were pressed up against the glass (’cause I thought they were in the yard). I just brought him back into my lap, but he was wound up tight for sure and cagey the rest of the night. The time they were in the back lot howling right as I was letting him in, he threw his head back and answered with one of his own, & I told them that was a gang he wasn’t allowed to play with.

On the bright side, maybe you’ll have fewer voles and related critters.

Always a bright side! Bud’s doing his best to take care of the yard critters for us. You should see the churned up snow all around the grasses & foliage I left uncut. Hey, habitat!

contrary to popular belief, the wallflowers always get the best view of such wild parties… and i bet bud was just aching to get his dance card filled up.

Cool, I bet Buddy went wild in the morning sniffing around those tracks.
